You'll cheer as Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) fight in Wakanda alongside Black Panther T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Okoye (Danai Gurira). The love story between Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany's Vision has now fully blossomed as they fight to protect the Mind Stone that makes Vision as alive as a sentient robot-host on HBO's Westworld. That's not to say the earthbound heroes don't have their moments.
If Thor isn't given a fourth movie to headline, I'd be thrilled to watch Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder instead bicker with Chris Pratt's Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Guardians meet AvengersĪs trailers have already revealed, Thor (post-Ragnarok) fits in with the Guardians as tightly as the Infinity Gauntlet on Thanos.
Those grudges haven't faded, and Gamora's (Zoe Saldana) close but complicated history as Thanos' favorite adopted daughter gets fully explored.
Early on in 2014's original Guardians of the Galaxy, several characters quickly name Thanos as someone they want to betray or destroy. 2 than a follow-up to more grounded films like Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Age of Ultron. Some of his actions are violent and grotesque enough that parents should take caution before bringing children elementary school age or younger to the film.īecause of the galactic focus on Thanos, the movie feels much more like a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. He's still a genocidal maniac, but he suffers desperate consequences for his deadly goals. Unlike Marvel villains who often lack character depth (think Helmut Zemo from Captain America: Civil War or Malekith from Thor: The Dark World), Thanos gets plenty of screen time to show what makes him feel triumph and what makes him feel pain. That character is Thanos (Josh Brolin), and as long promised, he takes center stage in his quest to collect six Infinity Stones that will let him wipe out half the universe. A few parts of the plot do seem conveniently written to push it forward, but they are nothing unforgivable.įinally, what makes this film stand out as one of the best superheroes movies we will ever watch is how bravely it flirts with a shockingly poignant ending, with a climax that will leave resounding theatres in gasps of silence. In fact, in many places, it is a laugh riot.īlack Panther brought a glimmer of hope to the kind of music Marvel films could offer, but Infinity War's music is not noteworthy, to say the least. In Marvel's trademark brand of humour through quirky characters and witty quips, this film is no less.
And they are all connected not just because they are in a film together, as the plot has profound connections in between them fitted neatly in the story.
Jam-packing these many superheroes in a film is a dizzying task - and the film has neat arcs for almost all of them, including the franchise-less Hulk. His sidekick "children" too, are pretty darn cool. Thanos is a mighty villain so marvelously charismatic that the writers must have feared would pull fans away from their favourite superheroes. Imagine a video game on steroids, and you come close to getting the picture. Infinity War has dealt with this challenge superbly: if everyone is a superhero, no one quite is, and that removes the idea of infallibility and brings in a whole new wave of emotion that comes with vulnerability - like in Nolan's Batman trilogy.īut there's no time to mourn the fallen, the film packs up and moves on pushing you forward with a surge of adrenaline. With each Marvel movie, the question of just how much bigger the next movie can get becomes more important, because too much of a thing often makes it sour. Prepare your voice boxes for some serious damage - the Avengers are here.
